Property Description
The history of the neighborhood:
Thomas and Sabina Lynch were among Mount Pleasant's earliest and wealthiest residents. Their 18th-century plantation house once stood on the land now known as Rivertowne. The Lynch family story in the Lowcountry began in 1677, when Jonack Lynch emigrated from Ireland to Charles Towne.
He established Blessing Plantation and quickly amassed a fortune, using his wealth to expand his holdings and solidify the family's place among the planter elite. By 1715, Jonack's son, Thomas Lynch, had acquired 1,170 acres along the east bank of the Wando River present-day Rivertowne. Thomas built a "new dwelling house" on the property, known as Brick House.
A prominent figure in colonial society, Thomas served in the Commons House of Assembly and was a colonel in the Christ Church Parish militia. Upon his death in 1738, Thomas left the estate to his wife, Sabina Vanderhorst, and their children. Sabina continued to live on the plantation until her death in 1741, and she was the last member of the Lynch family to reside on the Wando River property.
Their son, also named Thomas, became a staunch patriot and was elected to represent South Carolina at the First Continental Congress. His son, Thomas Lynch Jr., signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of his ailing father in 1776 forever etching the Lynch name into American history.
In the 1990s, archaeologists uncovered the foundation of Brick House on the site where Rivertowne now rests, along with several small brick kilns believed to have been used in the home's original construction. Today, near the community dock park area, residents and visitors can still see the remnants of historic brick kiln houses submerged in the ground, as well as artifact bricks scattered across the property and along the riverbank. Development of Rivertowne commenced in the early 1990s.
